GETTING AROUND PUGLIA

Getting around Puglia by public transport is fairly easy, at least as far as the main towns and cities go.

  •  AIR
    Both Bari and Brindisi have good connections to Rome, Naples and Milan.

  •  TRAIN
    FS trains ( National Railway ) connect nearly all the major locations, while small, private lines lead to otherwise remote areas - in the Gargano and on the edges of Le Murge.

  •  ROAD
    Most places can be reached by bus, but as ever, services are often infrequent or inconveniently early - a problem that can only really be solved by taking, or renting, your own car. Bari Airport provides discount car rental from the following car rental companies: Hertz, Avis, Alamo, Budget Dollar, National Sixt, and Thrifty Eurocar.
    By car Bari is only 2-3 hours from Naples and about 3-4 hours from Rome along the highways. Parking, however, is limited.

  • BOAT
    If you're on your way to Greece, it's worth noting that you don't have to leave from Bríndisi, you can also depart from Bari and Otranto, south of Lecce.

Puglian olive oil
Puglia with its olive trees, is at the main area for the production of oil and olives. The Pulian extra-virgin oil has a lot of advantages, due to the different types of olives used. The best oil is a yellow gold color, a sweet flavour, and it is mainly used in uncooked dishes. It is used also in the preparation of cooked dishes and roasted meat and fish.

Ear-shaped pasta
The ear-shaped pasta, called “orecchiette” is produced in Puglia. This kind of pasta is made with simple ingredients like durham wheat, water and salt. They are prepared with turnip making the famous dish that characterize the Puglian cuisine.

Puglian wine
Puglia is the Italian region with the highest production of wine. Nowdays in Puglia there are 25 types of wine D.O.C. with 128 different labels: 52 red wines, 28 white wines, 22 rose wines, 17 sweet wines and 9 spumanti. The main production of wine is in the Itria`s zone, in Locorotondo and Martina Franca. The most famous wines are “primitivo di Manduria”, and the wine of locorotondo.

Appetizers
In Puglia there are different kinds of appetizer such as oven baked musssels(cozze gratinate), made with mussels, parsley, breadcrumbs, eggs and oil. This is a very tasty and original dish.

First courses
“Ear-shaped pasta with turnips” (orecchiette con le cime di rapa)
This is a local dish made with the typical ear-shaped pasta, mixtured with turnips and a rich onion sauce to give additional taste to the dish.


"Spaghetti with mussels" (spaghetti con le cozze)
This particular dish is very deliscious due to the unique taste of the mussels directly from the sea. Simple to prepare, it is made with spaghetti, mussels, sliced tomatoes, parsley, garlic, salt, oil and pepper. Try it!!!


"Rice, potatoes and mussels" (riso, patate e cozze)
A mixture of rice and the special and original flavour of potatoes and mussels, gives the typical taste of the ingredients that come from the red Puglian ground.

"Fish soup" (zuppa di pesce)
This delicate and mouthwatering dish stimulates the palate due to the variety of fish like octopus, grambs, mussels and other molluscus, other blue fish, sliced tomatoes, oil, salt, pepper, garlic and parsley.


Second courses

"Octopus salad" (insalata di polpo)
This simple dish made of octopus, which is the principal ingredient cooked au vapeur, oil, vinegar, parsley, lemon, expresses the genuine, pleasure of Puglian cuisine.

"Lamb with peas" (agnello con piselli)
Another typical Puglian dish is lamb with peas. It is an oven baked dish very easy to prepare because it is made with lamb, peas, onion, extra-virgin oil, parsley, salt and pepper. It is the traditional Easter dish, and it is tasty when accompanied by an excellent wine.
